Recent achievements:
It is the responsibility of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) to provide reliable and up-to-date information for the formulation of development plans and administrative activities of the country. The BBS has been responsible for regularly collecting, compiling and publishing various data for the use of planners, public and private research institutes, international organizations and the public engaged in the formulation of national and local plans.
Recently, the National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS) and the Statistics Act 2013 have been formulated. As a result, the scope of work of BBS has expanded. In view of this, the organizational structure of BBS has been redefined and work is underway to strengthen and rationalize it. Under Section 7 of the Statistics Act 2013, surveys have been completed in various census and socio-economic and demographic fields.
The fifth census and household census of the country was held on 15-19 March 2011. This is the first time that the 2011 census data has been processed using iCADE Software and ICR machines. Using the digital method, it has been possible to give accurate results of the census in the fastest time. Under this census 05 (five) national reports, 64 (sixty four) district reports and 64 community reports have been published.
Besides, 14 (fourteen) monographs and 01 (one) population projection report have been prepared using the data of Census and Census 2011. Under this project, Redatam software and preliminary data of Census 2011 have been uploaded on BBS website through which users can prepare tables, graphs, charts etc. as per their demand. In addition, training on ICT has been provided at the departmental level through this project and furniture and various equipments have been provided to the field level offices.
The data collection of the third economic census was completed in March-May 2013 in Bangladesh. This is the first time that economic census data has been computerized at the BBS headquarters in the shortest possible time, using state-of-the-art government technology set up locally through the Union Information and Service Center (UISC) using high-powered software. A total of 6 reports will be published under the census out of which 01 National Report has been published,
01 Administrative Report and 64 Zila Report will be published soon. The BusinessRegister has undertaken activities under the Economic Census 2013 project. It will be used as the main framework for the formulation of economic statistics of the country. The business register will contain information on each organization name, address, legal structure, type of functions, number of manpower employed, annual average production, total assets, etc.
The Economic Census 2013 conducted the 'Expatriate Income Investment Survey 2018' under the project. The survey has collected information about different sectors of investment in expatriate income as well as information on different sectors of savings, information on expatriates and socio-economic status of households, which will play a significant role in formulating proper plans and recommendations for sound investment in expatriate income.
Moreover, the preparatory work of Integrated Agricultural Census 2018 is underway including the fisheries and livestock sector. The final report of the slum census and floating census 2014 program has been published. The size and production of 126 crops have been estimated on a regular basis on an annual basis. Land and irrigation statistics have been prepared.
The agricultural statistics of the year 2014 have been published. The report has been prepared after completing the survey of 9 crops under the productivity survey program. Quarterly Labor Force under the Health and Mortality Status Survey 2014, Education Household Survey, 2014, ICT Use and Access by Individuals and Households, 2013 Labor Force Survey, 2013 and Labor Market Information System Project.
Under the Monitoring the Situation of Vital Statistics of Bangladesh (MSVSB) project, Vital Statistics of Bangladesh is regularly published on the basis of data collected through 11 types of schedules from 2,012 selected areas across the country.
In addition, regular publications of BBSA such as Statistics Pocket Book, Statistics Yearbook and Monthly Statistics Bulletin are published regularly.
